What is the age of the Earth?
The age of the Earth is claimed by evolutionists to be about four or five billion years old. Note the margin of error!
Of course no one actually knows how old the Earth is? The Earth doesn't look old! Nor does it look young. No one was there at the beginning so we have no absolute information to measure the age of the Earth.
We cannot get the age of the Earth from the age of the Solar System because we don't know for certain how old that is! We have no absolute way of specifying how old the Earth is or how young it is.
However the beliefs and the resulting preconceptions of each person will allow them to see the Earth as they expect it to be. Consequently Evolutionists see a very old Earth, because they need this concept for their belief in evolution.
Christians see a very young Earth because that is what the Christian Bible says. (Those Christians who don't accept the Biblical description of Creation find themselves find themselves with a range of different ideas and they have to choose what they want to believe is true!)
Science - what does it show?
- The continents are eroding too fast for the process to have gone on for billions of years.
- The concentration of helium in the atmosphere should be greater.
- Some fossils appear to have been created in a short period of time. They do not need long timespans to form.
- Some things that science tells us should take millions of years to occur actually take place in much shorter timescales.
- The oceans do not contain enough salt if water has run off the land into the sea for ages.
- Our regular comets in space should not have tails if they have been in orbit for so long
Geological evidence for a young Earth
There are several ways in which geological evidence supports the concept of a 'young' Earth.
- indications of youth in surface features
- the rapidity of geological actions
- indications of flood origin of sediments
